Adams County, Colorado
72nd Avenue Bridge over Burlington Ditch/96th Avenue over O'Brien Canal, Federal Aid Project #C120-015

The RGA team prepared construction plans, specifications, and estimates for the replacement of two single-span bridges. The project included roadway approach design and, for the 72nd Avenue bridge, the design of new roadways to accommodate a relocation of the bridge. Construction phasing of the bridge replacements was complicated by the year-round flow in the irrigation ditches.

Adams County, Colorado
West 64th Avenue Improvements

The RGA team designed an expanded roadway section that included storm, water, and sanitary sewer improvements to West 64th Avenue. RGA coordinated and conducted public informational meetings, where feedback from local residents and business owners was integrated into the design process.  RGA also provided project oversight for 14 row takes and 38 temporary construction easement acquisition.  The review agencies having jurisdiction in this area are Urban Drainage Flood Control District, Colorado Department of Transportation, Crestview Water and Sanitation District, and Denver Water. RGA met with, submitted plans to, and obtained approval from all of these agencies.

11th Street Culvert Extension/Chambers Road Bridge Replacement

The RGA team was part of a design/build team for two structures on 11th Street in the City of Brighton. On 11th Street, our firm designed a 55-foot extension of an existing concrete box culvert, as well as a 37-foot single-span bridge on Chambers Road over the Fulton Ditch.  This bridge was considerably wider than the existing bridge to allow for future widening.

Hospital Road

RGA prepared construction plans, contract documents, and specifications for approximately 2,250 lineal feet of roadway. The original section of roadway began at Mill Street and ran north to the southern ROW of I-76 and consisted of an approximate 25’-wide asphalt road with road side ditch on both sides. The design replaced the old road with a new 30’-wide concrete roadway, signed and striped as a rural arterial. The project included intersection improvements at Mill Street and appropriate connections at the I-76 interchange. RGA received the Urban Arterials & Collectors award from the American Concrete Pavement Association in 2015 for this project.

Street Rehabilitation Project

The RGA team provided the design and construction administration for this three phase, three year project.  The project included all water transmission lines, meters, and services; repaving most of the streets, reconstruction of deteriorated curb, gutter, and sidewalk; construction of storm drain facilities; and replacement of most of the sanitary sewer lines in the older portion of the city.  Traffic control, minimizing utility disruption, and public relations were significant construction issues. RGA performed the design, prepared the plans, specifications and bid documents, conducted the bidding process, and provided the construction administration for this three-year, three-phase project. The project consisted of removing and replacing all of the existing asphalt pavement, most of the sidewalk, curb, and gutters, all of the cross pans, installing new handicap ramps and new storm drain inlets and pipes. The project also included replacing all of the water mains and services, installing new meters, and replacing a large portion of the sanitary sewer system.

City of Sheridan, Colorado
2016 Sheridan Bond Improvement Project

The 2016 Sheridan Bond Improvement Project (SBIP) included design and construction observation for improvements to roadways and address drainage traffic issues, summarized in the 2012 Capital Improvement Plan. The project consisted of 15,000 linear feet of roadway reconstruction and drainage improvements. Compaction grouting was utilized to efficiently and safely strengthen the subgrade beneath roadways sections over landfill material.  The 2016 zone addressed immediate areas of concern in the City, specifically focusing on West Princeton Place, South Clay Street, South Irving Street, and drainage concerns in the Bottoms Drainage area, located in the northwest corner of South Platter River Drive and highway 285. These projects were designed in early 2016. Construction of the first four (4) projects was completed in late 2016. As part of this work, RGA coordinated with the City of Sheridan, Urban Drainage  and Flood Control District (UDFCD), Metro Wastewater Reclamation District (MWRD), Denver Water, and all utility providers and obtained required clearances and permits. On behalf of the City, RGA produced temporary construction easements and exhibits and met with affected property owners to explain the project and obtain signatures for the temporary construction easements.

City of Sheridan, Colorado
Irving Street Bridge at Bear Creek project

The existing outdated 5' wide bridge and abutments were replaced with a prefabricated 10' wide x 70' long steel truss bridge on new abutments cased on steel piles driven to refusal. New approach slabs on each side transitions the existing tail grade to the new bridge deck and vastly improved accessibility from both ends. This project had the challenge of temporarily relocating three (3) overhead utility lines on each side of the creek before construction could start .This was needed in order for the foundation piles to be driven and setting the steel bridge structure. Power to the adjacent properties had to be continuously supplied during the construction. These temporary relocations delayed the start of construction to the winter months where additional winter concreate precautions were implemented to complete the construction. Project costs were monitored and were below the engineer's total estimated cost while completing the project in a timely manner.

Safety Improvements to Bear Creek Trail Crossing at South Lowell Boulevard

RGA assisted with the Arapahoe County Open Space planning grant application. With this grant, RGA assisted the City with improving the safety of the crossing of Bear Creek Trail with Lowell Boulevard.  This was achieved through the following infrastructure modifications: realignment of the Bear Creek Trail as it approaches S. Lowell Blvd. from the east; replacement of a portion of the existing 5’ raised sidewalk with an 8’ raised walk on the bridge to accommodate two-way bike and pedestrian traffic; realignment of the intersection of S. King St. and S. Lowell Blvd. which created a rest area with a bike repair station and bench; installation of a raised concrete crossing (speed hump) on S. Lowell Blvd.; installation of truncated domes at the west side of S. Lowell Blvd. and in 3 new curb ramps to meet ADA requirements; and installation of two crossing signs with pedestrian activated rectangular rapid flashing beacons.

Bear Creek Trail Crossing at South Lowell Boulevard Feasibility Study

In the spring of 2015, the City of Sheridan was awarded an Arapahoe County Open Space Planning Grant to conduct a feasibility analysis of alternative crossings for the Bear Creek Trail intersection with South Lowell Boulevard. The trail in this area had a difficult, highly dangerous and circuitous crossing of South Lowell Boulevard. The City of Sheridan and RGA completed design surveys, geotechnical evaluation, and preliminary designs to determine alternatives to make this crossing safer.
